McIntosh Hut

This is one of my favourite overnight hikes within a short drive of Queenstown!

I found myself in Queenstown over the new year period with just a flight and a rental car booked with intentions to spend some time camping and/or staying in huts around the area. There wasn’t many pictures or information on the McIntosh hut area besides the fact I’d have to ford a river about half way into the trail. I had a feeling it would be quite a good spot to spend the night however- given it’s location perched high above Glenorchy Town.

So I decided to head off here first and was just constantly blown away by the scenery along the trail. It’s all fairly easy hiking with wide trails most of the way up however the river crossing was fairly tricky and you definitely want to avoid crossing it after heavy rainfall.

I stopped at McIntyre hut on the way up for some lunch and then carried on for another hour or so to spent the night up at McIntosh Hut. It’s an old mining hut with lot’s of relics from the past and DOC have refurbished it a little over the years.

Completing the loop the next day, it was quite tricky getting down the (very!) steep slope however by taking it slop and using the wire farm fence at some points as you descend, it’s doable for most people.
